The Instagram Algorithm in 2026, Explained for Indian Creators

Team SMMBolt · Updated 24 October 2026 · 7 min read

There isn't one Instagram algorithm. Feed, Stories, Reels and Explore each rank content differently. Here's what matters for each.

Feed

Mostly shows posts from accounts you follow. Ranked by how likely you are to interact, based on your history with that account and the post's early engagement.

What helps: consistent posting, replies to comments, carousels that get swiped and saved.

Stories

Order in the tray is based on how much you interact with someone — viewing, replying, reacting.

What helps: daily stories with polls and questions.

Reels

Mostly shows content from accounts you don't follow. This is where growth happens. Ranked heavily by:

  • Watch time and completion
  • Rewatches
  • Shares (sends)
  • Saves
  • Audio and topic interest

What helps: strong hooks, short length, originality and early shares.

Explore

Content similar to what you've engaged with before, from accounts you don't follow. Saves and shares are strong signals here.

Original content matters more

Instagram has said it prioritises original content and reduces reach for reposts and watermarked videos from other apps. Film natively, don't repost others' reels.

The early signal problem

Every post gets a small test audience first. If that test goes poorly, reach stops. New and small accounts have the hardest time because their test audience is tiny. That's exactly where a small first-hour boost of views, shares and saves helps — it makes sure good content gets judged on more than a handful of viewers.
