Fake vs Real Followers: How to Check Any Instagram Account in 2 Minutes

Team SMMBolt · Updated 5 May 2026 · 6 min read

Brands, agencies and curious competitors all check follower quality. Here's what they look at — useful whether you're auditing someone else or making sure your own account holds up.

1. Engagement rate

Engagement rate = (average likes + comments per post) ÷ followers × 100.

FollowersTypical healthy rate
Under 10K3–8%
10K–100K1.5–4%
100K+0.8–2.5%

Very low engagement on a big account is the first red flag. You can calculate it with our free engagement rate calculator.

2. The follower list

Open the followers list and scroll. Lots of accounts with no profile picture, no posts and random usernames suggest low-quality followers.

3. Comment quality

"Nice pic 🔥" repeated forty times from accounts with no posts looks automated. Real comments mention the content.

4. Sudden jumps

Tools that track follower history show spikes. A spike isn't proof of buying — a viral reel also causes spikes — but a spike with no matching viral post is a hint.

5. Audience location

For an Indian creator, brands expect the majority of followers in India. Accounts with mostly foreign followers but Hindi content raise questions.

What this means if you buy followers

  • Buy Indian followers if your audience is Indian.
  • Pair followers with likes and views on recent posts so engagement looks consistent.
  • Grow in steps, not one giant jump.
  • Prefer refill services with older, real-looking profiles.
