What Is a Good Instagram Engagement Rate in India?
Team SMMBolt · Updated 12 July 2026 · 5 min read
Engagement rate is the number Indian brands and agencies look at right after follower count.
How to calculate it
Engagement rate = (likes + comments on recent posts ÷ number of posts) ÷ followers × 100.
Example: average 450 likes and 30 comments on 10,000 followers = 4.8%.

Benchmarks for Indian accounts
| Followers | Low | Good | Excellent |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1K–10K | under 3% | 3–6% | 6%+ |
| 10K–50K | under 2% | 2–4% | 4%+ |
| 50K–500K | under 1% | 1–3% | 3%+ |
| 500K+ | under 0.7% | 0.7–2% | 2%+ |
How to improve it
- Ask questions in captions and reply to every comment in the first hour.
- Use carousels — they get more saves and second looks.
- Post fewer, better posts.
- Remove obviously fake or inactive followers you've accumulated over the years.
- Make sure likes on new posts keep pace if you've grown followers quickly.
