Instagram for Small Businesses in India: A No-Agency Playbook

Team SMMBolt · Updated 21 September 2026 · 8 min read

An agency will charge ₹10,000–₹25,000 a month to post on your Instagram. For most small businesses in India, the owner (or a family member) can do 80% of that in 20 minutes a day.

Set up the profile properly

  • Name field: include what you are and where. "Sharma Sweets | Indore" is searchable; "Sharma Sweets" alone is not.
  • Bio: what you sell, who it's for, and how to order.
  • Contact buttons: phone, WhatsApp, directions.
  • Highlights: Menu/Products, Prices, Reviews, Location.

What to post

You don't need a content strategy deck. Rotate these:

  1. Product or service close-ups (reels of 7–12 seconds)
  2. Behind the counter — making, packing, setting up
  3. Customer moments (with permission)
  4. Offers and festival posts — Diwali, Eid, Christmas, Onam, Pongal
  5. Answers to questions customers ask on the phone

How often

3–4 reels a week and daily stories is plenty.

Looking established from day one

A new page with 23 followers makes visitors hesitate, even if your shop has been running for twenty years. A few hundred rupees on Indian followers and Indian likes fixes the first impression while your real content builds the audience.

Turn followers into customers

  • Reply to every DM within the hour during business hours.
  • Pin a post with prices and how to order.
  • Put your Instagram handle on bills, bags and the shop board.
  • Run one simple offer a month: "Show this post for 10% off".

Measure what matters

Track DMs, calls and walk-ins that mention Instagram — not just likes.
