Saves vs Likes on Instagram: Which One Matters More?

Team SMMBolt · Updated 30 June 2026 · 4 min read

Likes are easy — a double tap while scrolling. Saves take intent: "I want to come back to this." That's why Instagram treats them differently.

Why saves matter

  • They signal lasting value (recipes, tips, lists, outfits).
  • They're private, so they can't be faked for show.
  • Posts with lots of saves keep getting distributed for days.

Content that earns saves

  • Step-by-step tutorials
  • Lists ("10 cafés in Pune under ₹300")
  • Templates and checklists
  • Price comparisons
  • Infographics with useful numbers

Shares are just as powerful

When someone sends your reel to a friend, Instagram reads it as "this is worth showing to new people". Instagram's leadership has publicly said sends are one of the strongest signals for reaching non-followers.

Getting more

End carousels with "Save this for later". Ask "tag a friend who…" for share-worthy content. And for posts you know are strong, adding a few hundred saves and shares costs very little.
