Instagram Shadowban: How to Check and Fix It

Team SMMBolt · Updated 14 May 2026 · 5 min read

"Shadowban" isn't an official term, but most people use it to mean their content suddenly stopped reaching non-followers.

How to check

Go to Settings → Account Status. Instagram now shows whether your content is eligible to be recommended to non-followers. If anything is flagged, it tells you which post and why.

Common causes

  • Using banned or broken hashtags
  • Reposting others' content without permission
  • Posting content that's borderline on community guidelines
  • Using automation apps or sharing your password with "followers" apps
  • Sudden spammy behaviour — mass liking, following or commenting

How to recover

  1. Remove the flagged posts and appeal if you think they were wrongly flagged.
  2. Disconnect every third-party app that has your login.
  3. Change your password and turn on two-factor authentication.
  4. Take a short break from heavy activity — a few days of normal use.
  5. Post original content.

Receiving followers or likes from a panel that only uses your public link does not involve your login, but avoid huge sudden spikes while you're recovering.
